My love of fitness began in college when I was introduced
to weight training. At the time, I tried to learn everything
I could about exercise and nutrition through college courses
while majoring in Biology. I then completed dental school at
the University of Pennsylvania, but my real passion was physical
fitness. I continued weight training and doing CrossFit for
the next 15 years while raising my three sons. Unfortunately,
the years of heavy lifting took a toll on my knees and by the
age of 35, I was in physical therapy trying to heal them. I was
discouraged with the antiquated exercises that I was prescribed,
and after completing the sessions, I found it did little to fix my pain.
And so my search for a cure began . I found a Pilates Mat class at
my gym and I was shocked that even though I could squat 200 pounds
of free weights, Pilates side-leg lifts with just my body weight was
HARD WORK! I learned that the Pilates method was meant to balance my
strength in both my large and small muscles, with my flexibility,
something my body was sorely missing (pun intended). I began studying
Contemporary Pilates with Stott Pilates in 2009 and received my
certification two years later in all equipment with a special focus
on Injuries and Special Populations. I am also certified in Buff Bones,
an Osteoporosis safe method created by Rebekah Rotstein and have
completed many hours of study in the anatomy of movement through
the Mount Sinai based course FAMI. Currently, I am studying the
Classical Pilates Method with Kathryn Ross-Nash.
Now, at 52, I feel stronger functionally, have less pain,
and have more flexibility than I even had in my 20s or 30s.
I am a true believer that the Pilates Method will keep me
moving with fluidity and strength well into my old age and
I love sharing this amazing method with my students!
